In general, we recommend Cura LulzBot Edition as it contains the slicing software, printer host, and is easier for new users.

What is Slicing Software?

Slicing software converts your 3-Dimensional model (typically STL/OBJ) and determines the 3D printer toolpath based on the options selected. It uses the nozzle diameter, printing/movement speeds, layer height, and other variables to determine the coordinates where it needs to move, and the rates at which it will do so.

This information is exported out of the program as a .gcode file. The resulting .gcode file is a plain-text file with a series of GCODE commands, and a list of the complete X,Y, and Z axis coordinates used for printing the 3D model.

Slic3r: A popular and powerful slicing Free Software option

Slic3r can be more powerful in certain 3D printing use cases. It has more options for converting your 3D model into the GCODE that your LulzBot 3D printer uses to create your 3D printed objects.

We have tested and approved slicing configs available below for each 3d printing filament and print quality option. Select your LulzBot 3D printer to view the configs for your specific filament options and needs.

Lulzbot Taz 3d Printer

Design space software. In order to control your LulzBot 3D printer you'll need to use either the Graphical LCD controller or a separate printer host.
